My sweet Alanos,
We are going through a difficult time here, and it will only get worse. I know it. We all know it. Men started to have nightmares some nights ago, and their intensity is increasing. You understood what it means for usâ¦
The flying snakes will be upon us soon. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, we canât be sure. Just like for the first attack, all civilians are requested to gather and hide behind the protective walls. They are part of the new fort and have been reinforced, but they are far from being a safe haven.
This time, we know what we are facing, and we want to defend ourselves. The Commander agreed for all workers to receive a sword. Some, who could prove their dexterity with such weapon, have been given a bow. We are not to fight openly, but weâll be able to help the soldiers protecting us.
Everybodyâs tense. This is a strange situation to know that we will be under attack soon, and that many of us will not survive. I guess the military is being trained for this, but not simple construction workers like us. Why to lie: we are scared.
Even more so since yesterday.

Cole is one of the stonemasons building the barracks inside the fort. Heâs a good worker and a cheerful companion, who happens to be from Pastezu, the same city as Colonel Laval. This was no surprise that our Commander decided to meet Cole, and invited him to join us for a drinking session some days ago.
âIâm sure he will enjoy tasting some real Polobrag, and heâll give me news from the Karpi mountains. Itâs been too long I didnât go home. I wonder what changed there.â
They got along well, and talked for hours. Their conversation was not especially interesting for me as I didnât know anything about the people or the places they were mentioning, but it was a cheerful moment. For a while, I could have been in a tavern with some old friends, discussing the latest news of Keeroonah, and I almost forgot my situation.
We all felt good that night, and I guess thatâs why Cole has been confident enough to come to us yesterday evening. He was frightened, and didnât dare to tell anyone about it. Even after the events of last months, he considered he couldnât say to his comrades what had happened to him.
Cole is among those who have nightmares.
He had before the previous attack, and he knew he was not the only one to dream of the creatures. But on the night before, his vision had been different, more vivid.
While the first time the images in his head had been blurry and confused, he could see every detail this time. He remembered the incipient lights of dawn in the east, while the stars were still shining against the dark western sky.
He was standing alone on the beach, and he felt irremediably attracted by the water. Even if he knew he shouldnât do so, he started to walk towards the shore.
